Is there anything more dramatic than to have a huge mule deer buck backdropped by the Pacific Ocean? This is just an awesome photo taken by guide Chad Wiebe. If you look at ocean, there is even a fishing boat see. Classic. Also there is the tip of Santa Cruz Island. While James' buck isn't overly heavy, it has everything else, highlighted by a huge frame. Look at his G-3's and 4's!
I remember seeing this buck a couple weeks prior to him getting killed. We were traveling through the Old Ranch region when this bucks runs to the north into Carrington Point. Due to closure imposed by the National Park Service, Carrington was shut off from entry due to nesting concerns of a little shorebird called the snowy plover. That closure is annually reopened September 15th. As fate would have it, Chad got to hunt this area soon thereafter and found this beast for Mr. Brogan. This was the 6th largest buck shot in 2006. How many places could tout that a 222 buck was the 6th biggest of the season? For many hunt programs, a 220+ buck would be their marketing specimen for years to come. For us on SRI, it was considered an awesome buck, but there are bigger ones. Were we spoiled out there? Of course we were, but we put in our time and worked extremely hard for our clients. Often when we have combination elk and deer hunts , a guide had to pack out four animals out on our backs within a four day period. Great animals, incredible camaraderie, and lots of sweat-- that's what the Island was all about.
