#41 MARK HACKBARTH Top 100 Santa Rosa Island Mule Deer Bucks
Two weeks prior to Mark harvesting this buck, it was actually passed up by another client. I wrote during Jack Elkin's day (#72) that he chose not to go after a great buck. Well, this is it. Jack was a "width whore" and didn't think this one was wide enough. Good news for Mark. How someone could pass up a 214 buck is beyond me! The uniqueness of this buck is fantastic.
Mark was a true asset to us on the Island. When we began researching taking reproductive material from these deer in 2008, Mark stepped up and assisted us in setting up some original protocol for recovering buck semen. Whenever we asked Mark for help, he would be there. When MUM exhibited at the Dallas Safari Club show, we always got a chance to spend some quality time with him, even though he lived a couple hours away, in Tyler, TX.
While this was Mark's largest buck he took on SRI, he also harvested some other great bucks. Mark wasn't real proud of his marksmanship on this hunt. He took it upon himself for his next hunt that he would be properly prepared. In 2008, he lived up to his resolution and did great.
