#46 PETE SALACCI Top 100 Santa Rosa Island Mule Deer Bucks
This was Pete's second trip to Santa Rosa Island with us. The previous year, he bought the auction tag at the California Rangeland Trust fundraiser and shot a 29" 9x11 that scored 193. That was a pretty good buck, but nothing compared to this monster. For whatever reason (it couldn't be that he was the best guide!), Adam brought in the biggest deer in the 2011 season, and this was certainly one of them.
Pete also is a ranch owner who has Tule elk on it. Back in the 1980's he invited Wayne and I to his place to look it over for a elk hunting operation. Things didn't pan out in the that endeavor, but he did get some nice elk off his ranch.
Sometimes when I'm rilling through all these hunting photis, it's easier to figure out what year it is by looking at what hat the client is wearing. Every year we gave a new designed hat to each client. Don't know why I thought of this random thought right now, but I saw in this photo that Pete was wearing this brown hat with gold lettering, and thought to myself, "Oh, Pete hunted in 2011." Yes, 2011 was our last, fateful year out there. If we could have only stayed out there with the Vail and Vickers for many more years....
